HP original toner cartridges contain not only toner but also the drum and corona wire (e.g., the key parts of the duplication system.) I have used laser printers that had these parts separate, and they also work fine, but the replacement process is a bit of a maintenance challenge for the non-technical. Plus, you must be aware of the way these affect the printing and know when to change them. (Of course, if the average user never uses his printer very much, this might not even come up.)

Still the genius of the HP system is that it always works, and always works well--at least many more hours and copies than historically we have ever had the right to expect from a printer. and TOTALLY in a different class than ink jet technology.

So if you want that reliability and error-free reproduction, you guarantee it by buying original HP toner cartridges from HP.

However, the technology is not rocket science. So a good refurbished cartridge can be every bit as reliable as an original, fit exactly the same, and the corona wire and drum can be replaced. However, this adds quite a bit to the cost, and they don't need to be replaced as often as the toner wears out--anywhere from 2x to 10x less frequently, probably only the people who refurbish cartridges could tell us for sure and it may depend on the smoothness of the paper you use, etc. Consequently, often a refurbished cartridge is going to have had the drum and corona wire inspected, but not replaced. In fact, if used cartridges are available enough and cheap enough they might never reuse cartridges where the drum or corona wire are damaged. Some companies might even have a lower standard than HP--imagine that! They are after all charging less.

So what I do, is a) try to buy refurbished cartridges from as reliable companies as possible, b) always have an original on hand as a back up in case anything goes wrong, and c) only buy refurbished if the price difference is considerable, say less than half.

Also, this particular cartridge is for a very high resolution color laser printer. I'm getting printing-quality copies that are better than what print shops provided some time ago. 3600 dpi in color boggles my mind. I have printing-quality paper (thicker, glossier, whiter stock) for my PR pieces. It looks awesome, and I can print on demand for less than I can order copies (of lower quality actually) from a print shop. I'm not going to compromise the registration of the four toner cartridges and the pristine quality of original toner powder and new drums and wires for a few pennies per copy.

Hence here you see me buying original toner cartridges from HP! (But I don't always for every printing application. I do buy laser printers from HP whenever possible, because I know how they will last.)

These have worked just fine for my Samsung CLP 365W. I feel I got a great deal, buying them together from Amazon. I had tried to order them from the Samsung site, but they were missing one color (and I needed them all at the same time, since all the colors went out at the same time, from the starter cartridges that came with the printer). I had no trouble installing them into the printer, and they print great.
I was printing a lot of something on one side of the paper, and it started to look like the yellow was going out, but I took out the cartridge and shook it side to side, and it printed great again after that!

I purchased this large batch of ink for a rather unusually large printing job I was doing. I used over half.. and during that part, it worked wonderfully. Now that my printer has set for a few days, ink cartridges are fine, but it won't print.. AT ALL. It just shoots out blank pages. I talked to some friends that just got a new printer.. I asked them why they got a new one, and they mentioned the same thing... same ink cartridges, same problem. So, it does great in the beginning, but beware of letting it set in your printer for any amount of time without use. As soon as I'm able to get my printer working again (if I can), I'll post what the problem was so if anyone else has the same issue, you'll have a fix for it.

Update - 1/25/13 - My printer kept getting worse, to the point that it wouldn't even print a legible barcode. We went and purchased Kodak printer ink to replace these. When we took these out, they had leaked EVERYWHERE ink the printer. We put the Kodak ones in, and of course, same problem as before.. very bad print quality. I took the print head out, cleaned it thoroughly with alcohol, sprayed it out with air, etc etc.. everything I could find on the internet to fix the problem. Put it all back together, and it STILL WILL NOT WORK. These cartridges completely screwed up a $130 Kodak printer. Beware!! DO NOT BUY!

I ordered the three primary 564XL color cartridges. Two came directly from Amazon: 5-stars! Exactly as advertised. However, the third came from "MegaToners". BEWARE! The order was for an Original cartridge and it was swapped out for a remanufactured cartridge. In addition, the remanufactured cartridge did not have the microchip attached to the cartridge. The printer did not recognize the new cartridge. Nowhere in the packaging was there instructions on what to do with the cartridge without a chip. Through some internet research, I learned that I could transfer the OEM chip to the remanufactured cartridge and it might work. I did that, and the new cartridge still did not work. Rip-off!!! I will be requesting a full refund on the third cartridge.
