Brother has thoughtfully designed its printers, so users don't need to throw away the drum every time they replace a toner cartridge. Unfortunately, when it does come time to replace the drum, the OEM replacements cost nearly as much as a new printer.

Although the original drum in my HL-2270DW printer was rated for 12,000 copies, it delivered more than 20,000 copies before it would no longer perform and my printer stopped working. To make my printer operational again, I needed a replacement drum. Since Amazon offers this drum for about 1/3 the cost of the OEM version and this vendor offers an impressive one-year warranty, I decided to give it a try. My printer was inoperative, so I was anxious to receive the replacement drum that I ordered on March 26th. But it took until April 5th to receive it, which I deemed to be very slow delivery. As an Amazon Prime customer I usually receive my orders in two days.

Nonetheless, when the drum finally did arrive, it was well packaged, protected and appears to be virtually identical to the OEM version. Installing the drum did not automatically reset the drum-life counter, but it did restore my printer's ability to make sharp, clean copies. Instructions for how to manually reset the printer's drum counter are on Brother's Website, which I followed.

Now my printer works just like new again for a cost that was dramatically lower than buying a drum made by the printer's manufacturer. What I cannot report, however, is how long this third-party replacement drum will last. Only time and experience will give me that answer. I am pleased with its performance thus far and am optimistic that it will continue working well.
