When the cartridge that came with my printer ran out, I bought another "starter" cartridge since it was cheap and lasts a pretty long time for my use. I didn't realize Brother builds in this gear thing to their non-starter cartridges, and of course my printer toner light stayed lit when I put it in. After reading some of the many online instructions of how to install a gear on a starter cartridge, I was about to order one. Then I peeked inside the printer and saw a little white tab sticking out on the left side where the reset mechanism would sit if the toner cartridge were in there. So I just pushed the little white tab toward the back of the printer, put the starter cartridge back in, and voila! The light goes off and the printer works. Much simpler than installing the gear mechanism.
